Résumé / Abstract

The relationship between art and the fire symbol in Fragments is highlighted through the predicament of Baako. As a romantic artist, Baako appears as an exceptional figure committed to bearing light for salvation purposes. In fact, after his stay in the West, regarded as the world of the gods, the artist comes back home endowed with sapience and knowledge metaphorically perceived as light or fire intended to be shared. However, the light bearer is confronted with the hostility of an unenlightened community whose cavemen’s expectations are below the visionary gleam. The artist is constrained to loneliness and relinquishes his vocation.
